Hurricane Florence continues to slowly barrel towards the Carolinas on the Eastern coast of the United States with sustained winds of 110mph with gusts hitting 135-140mph. It is hovering between a Category 3 and Category 4 hurricane with an outside chance of hitting Category 5 due to the warm waters it is crossing. The storm’s outer band is likely to start hitting the coast Thursday morning with the hurricane making landfall sometime between Thursday evening and Friday morning. New projections have the storm taking a bit of a southerly as it moves inland, affecting much of South Carolina as well. States of emergency have been declared in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington DC. Many have already evacuated.
There are some however who say they are going to ride the storm out. CNN interviewed one woman who didn’t want to leave her business establishment and belongings behind. Naive or uneducated, it boggles the mind. If it’s true what scientists are saying – that there could be a storm surge nearly 80 feet high, you won’t have to worry about your business and things – you’ll be at the bottom of the ocean. Cities along the coast may no longer exist.
If you are in the Carolina area, do all you can to evacuate immediately. This one does not look good. There is also potential for weeks of recovery due to flash flooding, mudslides, power outages, gas shortages and other unforeseen circumstances. Pray for the best. Prepare for the worst. But be SMART.
And while most are focusing on Florence, there are several other hurricanes and tsunamis out there. Super typhoon Mangkhut is a Category 5 storm with winds at 185mph which is heading towards Hong Kong. Olivia is bearing down on Hawaii. Back in the Atlantic, following up Florence is Tropical Storm Isaac which is expected to pass through the lower part of the Caribbean and Hurricane Helene which is too far off to yet determine it’s path. Stay safe everyone!
