Weekend Football News And Notes

Since we spoke about the lone college football game worth anything this weekend yesterday (the Army – Navy game) and just mentioned the Heisman Trophy presentation, let’s get right to today’s pro games. Oh, and the college football Division I bowl season begins next weekend for those who want more NCAA action…

In today’s early NFL games, the New York Giants exploded against the Washington Redskins, routing them 40-16 in Washington DC. The Redskins have completely fallen apart after losing their starting quarterback Alex Smith to a season ending leg injury as well as their backup Colt McCoy. Meanwhile, the NY Giants have won 4 of their last 5 after starting the season 1-7.

In one of the biggest games of the day in relation to playoff posturing, the Kansas City Chiefs went to overtime with the Baltimore Ravens with the Chiefs ultimately emerging as victors in a 27-24 win. Also, the New England Patriots were stunned at the buzzer as the Miami Dolphins stole a 34-33 win from the defending AFC Champs. And in a big AFC South match-up, the Indianapolis Colts prevailed on the road 24-21 against the Houston Texans.

Other scores include:

New York Jets 27 – Buffalo Bills 23

Cleveland Browns 26 – Carolina Panthers 20

Green Bay Packers 34 – Atlanta Falcons 20

New Orleans Saints 28 – Tampa Bay Buccaneers 14

The late afternoon games include the Cincinnati Bengals at the Los Angeles Chargers, the Denver Broncos at the San Francisco 49ers, the Philadelphia Eagles at the Dallas Cowboys, the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Oakland Raiders and the Detroit Lions at the Arizona Cardinals.

Tonight’s Sunday Night game is the Los Angeles Rams at the Chicago Bears.

Tomorrow night’s Monday Night football game is the Minnesota Vikings at the Seattle Seahawks.

Don’t Worry, It’s Murray

The Heisman Trophy for the best player in college football was awarded last night to Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray who beat out quarterback Tua Tagovailoa of Alabama and quarterback Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State. It is the second straight year that an Oklahoma Sooners quarterback won the coveted trophy as Baker Mayfield, currently the quarterback of the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, won the hardware last year.
