Brownie Day yesterday. Pastry Day today. No wonder we gain a hundred pounds every holiday season!
40 years ago today, on December 8th, 1978, the Michael Cimino film “The Deer Hunter” was released. Starring Robert de Niro, Christopher Walken, and Meryl Streep, the movie would go on to win the Best Picture of the Year at the Academy Awards. Many of the themes of this Vietnam – era film still resonate today from life in small town, blue collar America to the scourge of post-traumatic stress disorder and the effect of war on families and friendships.
Prior to attending the Army – Navy game in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, President Donald Trump announced that Chief of Staff John Kelly will be stepping down from the position at the end of the year. The action is believed to be the direct result of the Mueller investigation as Kelly interviewed briefly with the Mueller team as a part of the Russia probe. Kelly, a retired Marine corps general, lasted approximately a year and a half with the Trump administration. He had been appointed to help rein in some of the chaos that surrounded the White House staff. Alas, it appears that the continuing investigation into the Trump administration, a clash of egos, and the tightening noose of subpoenas and indictments have prevented any chance of that outcome.
In the annual Army – Navy rivalry game, the Black Knights of the United States Military Academy at West Point defeated the Midshipmen of the Naval Academy at Annapolis 17-10. This is the third year in a row that Army has won the big game after Navy had won 14 years in a row dating back to 2002. President Donald Trump attended the game and spent the first half of the game on the Army sidelines and the second on the Navy side. Navy’s season is officially over. Army will play the University of Houston in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl on Saturday December 22nd at 330p EST on ESPN.
