Weekend Football News And Notes

Plenty of action to get to this weekend!

In college football, it was a day full of upsets which likely means a big shakeup in regards to the national college football playoff rankings.

The biggest upset of Saturday was #13 LSU upsetting #2 Georgia by a score of 36-16, a very significant margin of victory. The Georgia loss, at least temporarily, boosts Notre Dame into the playoff picture as they defeated Pittsburgh 19-14, while Alabama and Ohio State also stayed undefeated. #4 Clemson had a bye week this week as they prepare to play undefeated North Carolina State next weekend.

Other big upsets included #6 West Virginia losing to unranked Iowa State 30-14, #17 Oregon defeating #7 Washington 30-27 in overtime, #8 Penn State falling to unranked Michigan State in the final minute at home 21-17, undefeated #19 Colorado gaining its first defeat at the hands of USC 31-20 and #16 Miami as well as #21 Auburn also losing.

In the Saturday night prime time game, #12 Michigan showed they are for real by stomping #15 Wisconsin 38-13 to improve their record to 6-1 with a 4-0 record in the Big Ten. The Wolverines only loss is an opening day loss to undefeated #5 Notre Dame.

On the professional front, it’s been an interesting day early on in the NFL. The Pittsburgh Steelers came back in the last minute with a Roethlisberger to Antonio Brown touchdown to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals 28-21. The Atlanta Falcons outscored the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a shootout 34-29, and the Miami Dolphins outlasted the Chicago Bears 31-28 in overtime.

Seattle Seahawks 27 – Oakland Raiders – 3 from London

Minnesota Vikings 27 – Arizona Cardinals 17

New York Jets 42 – Indianapolis Colts 34

Washington Redskins 23 – Carolina Panthers 17

Houston Texans 20 – Buffalo Bills 13

The afternoon NFL games include the LA Rams at the Denver Broncos, the Baltimore Ravens taking on the Tennessee Titans, and the Jacksonville Jaguars versus the Dallas Cowboys.

Sunday night’s game is the Kansas City Chiefs at the New England Patriots and the Monday Night Football game is the San Francisco 49ers at the Green Bay Packers.
