245 years ago today, on October 12th, 1773, the very first insane asylum in the United States opened in Williamsburg, Virginia. The original building burned to the ground in 1885 due to faulty electrical wiring that had been newly installed. Eastern State Hospital operated up until 1968 when a new building was commissioned on the grounds. That building was completed in 1985 and has since become a museum which focuses on the treatment of mental illness.
Today, we call such institutions Congress.
