Last night’s UFC 229 fight erupted into a near riot following the main event between popular Conor McGregor and undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov. After Nurmagomedov won the fight on a submission move against McGregor, the ultimate fighter climbed over the fencing of the octagon and went after McGregor’s entourage which spilled into the audience. Meanwhile, Nurmagomedov’s own entourage ran into the arena where McGregor was recovering and began to attack the startled fighter. It was the contentious fallout from weeks of sensationalizing McGregor’s felony assault attack on Nurmagomedov’s bus at UFC 223 in April of this year.
The result was borderline anarchy. Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson stated that the melee at T-Mobile Arena was far worse than the one he was involved in back in 1997 following his second fight with Evander Holyfield. UFC President Dana White expressed his disappointment after the fight and said he was considering suspensions and other penalties against the fighters. He even stated that stripping the UFC title from Nurmagomedov was on the table. In any case, the night was a black eye for the growing sport.
