The long running Saturday Night Live premiered last night with its 44th season and there was plenty of material available for the ensemble’s sketches to kick things off. Of course, there was plenty of focus on the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court hearings. The cold open featured a recreation of Brett Kavanaugh’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee with special guest star Matt Damon portraying an exaggerated Kavanaugh to humorous effect. Various SNL cast members played the various Senators with SNL alumnus Rachel Dratch making an appearance as Senator Amy Globuchar. Aidy Bryant has a humorous bit playing sex crimes prosecutor Rachel Mitchell, and Kate McKinnon nearly stole the bit with her portrayal of Senator Lindsey Graham.
Actor Adam Driver was the host of the season premiere and the musical guest was rapper Kanye West. While his musical sets were underwhelming, West stirred controversy by refusing to take off his “Make America Great Again” hat and going off on a rant about supporting President Trump and calling for dialogue. His rambling diatribe led to audience boos, several cast members walking off the set including Adam Driver and the rest staring in shock; shaking their heads in disbelief.
If this is how the first episode of the season kicks off, it should be a kinetic, tantalizing program this year for the often lambasted show.
