8/16/18 – Image Metaphor Of The Day

Kind of looks like that guy in the old 7-Up commercials…

Anyways, the Atlanta Braves – Florida Marlins game got ugly last night after Marlins pitcher Jose Urena plunked Atlanta Braves rookie sensation Ronald Acuna Jr. with a fastball right above the elbow to start the game. Acuna Jr. had entered the game hitting home runs in 5 straight games and with the last 3 homers coming off the Marlins in 3 successive lead-off at bats. That gave Acuna eight homers in his past eight games, a span in which he batted .471 with an eye-popping 1.749 OPS. Pitcher Urena wasn’t having it and intentional hit Acuna Jr. with the very first pitch of the game leading to warnings to both teams by the umpire and both benches clearing and angrily meeting face to face on the field.

If I were the Braves, I would be angry too. If you don’t want him to hit another lead-off home run, simply pitch around him. You don’t have to intentionally throw at a 20 year old rookie and risk a serious injury. Also, the Braves are in the midst of a pennant chase while the Marlins are in dead last with nothing to play for. The old Braves logo represented here is a two-fold metaphor: the cry of pain from Acuna Jr. and the fighting nature of the Atlanta ball club.
